I start with an overview of Rotherhithe as it was before South Dock was established, to put it into its historical context.  I then look at when and why it was built in 1811, and from there move on to talk about the changes that were made to it over the 159 years until the closure of the Surrey Commercial Docks in 1970.  Following its incorporation into the Commercial Dock Company in 1850, it is tempting to see South Dock as a mere adjunct to Greenland Dock, but it had a distinctive career of its own, and has features that it shares with none of the other Rotherhithe docks.
